A group being proposed to care for Belgrave Station and environs. Waiting for governance issues to be sorted with the auspicing body, the Keep Australia Beautiful Council which runs the Victoria-wide, Stationeers program. This group is being supported by Yarra Ranges Council, the Belgrave Traders Association and the Southern Dandenongs Landcare Group.
We would love to get this group happening and other stations in the corridor from Ferntree Gully to Belgrave. This corridor is, and could be even better wildlfe habitat and yet another corridor for our Dandenongs plants and animals as we lose more trees with increased development. Judy Donnelly, one of the members of Friends of the Rail Trail, has just arranged with assistance from James Merlino, to have rubbish/litter collected from the railway corridor. The state government has increased patronage on our railway line with long overdue level crossing removals and commuters deserve better. Already there are thousands of tourists annually who travel to Belgrave by train. We need litter collected regularly and we also need to meet with MetRail to review their fuel reduction program lineside. Underneath the litter and ivy are tree ferns struggling to survive as well as other shrubs and small trees which not only look beautiful and showcase local vegetation, provide shade andf humidity and habitat for birds especially. More news as soon as it becomes available.
